Tulasi Mahatyam (तुलसी महात्म्यम्) translates to “The Greatness of Tulasi”. It refers to a body of sacred Hindu scriptures that glorify Tulasi Devi, the divine manifestation of the sacred basil plant (Ocimum sanctum), often called Holy Basil in English. Revered in Hindu tradition, Tulasi is considered not merely a plant but a goddess, devotee of Lord Vishnu, and a symbol of purity, devotion, and sanctity.
Who is Tulasi Devi?
Tulasi Devi is regarded as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. According to Puranic legends, she took birth on Earth in the form of a plant to bless humanity and help them attain moksha (liberation).
There are different accounts of her origin, but most stories associate her with Vrinda, a pious and devoted wife of the demon king Jalandhara. Because of her unwavering devotion to her husband, Jalandhara became invincible. To help the Devas, Lord Vishnu had to break her chastity, leading to Jalandhara’s defeat. In grief and anger, Vrinda cursed Vishnu to turn into stone, leading to the Shaligrama form. After her death, Vrinda took the form of the Tulasi plant, and Vishnu blessed her to be eternally worshipped alongside Him.

- Tulasi is seen as a purifier of mind, body, and soul. Just being in her presence is said to cleanse one’s aura and destroy sins.
- Offering Tulasi leaves in Vishnu/Krishna worship is considered one of the most sacred acts. Scriptures say that any offering without Tulasi is incomplete.
- Tulasi is used in pujas, vratas (vows), and weddings. Tulasi Vivah, a symbolic wedding of Tulasi and Shaligrama (Vishnu), marks the beginning of the auspicious Hindu wedding season.
- Those who worship Tulasi with devotion and follow her stories are said to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
